He had a career that spanned over five decades, during which he lent his melodious voice to over 3,500 songs in various languages including Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, and Malayalam.
As a classical vocalist, he belonged to the Bhendibazaar Gharana and was trained under Ustad Aman Ali Khan. He is considered one of the most versatile and celebrated vocalists of the Hindi film industry, often credited with the success of Indian classical music in Hindi commercial movies. As a musician, Dey is best known for infusing Indian classical music in a pop framework that ushered the golden period in Hindi cinema.
Early Life and Education
Manna Dey was born in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) to a middle-class family. His father, Purna Chandra Dey, was a renowned theater artist and singer, and his mother, Mahamaya Dey, was a housewife. Manna Dey showed a keen interest in music from a young age, and his father provided him with early training in classical music.
Manna Dey studied at Scottish Church College and graduated with a degree in Commerce. However, he continued to pursue his passion for music and received training in Hindustani classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan and Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan.
Carrier
Manna Dey’s career in music began in the 1940s when he started performing on the radio. In 1942, he made his debut as a playback singer in the film Tamanna. However, it was his performance in the 1950 film Afsar that brought him national recognition. The song “Upar Gagan Vishal” from the film became an instant hit and showcased Manna Dey’s versatility and range as a singer.
Over the years, Manna Dey became known for his ability to sing in a wide range of styles, including classical, semi-classical, and modern genres. He collaborated with many leading music directors, including Shankar-Jaikishan, Salil Chowdhury, R.D. Burman, and S.D. Burman, and lent his voice to some of the most iconic songs in Indian cinema.

Awards Achived
Manna Dey’s contribution to Indian music was recognized with several awards and honors throughout his career. He received the Padma Shri in 1971 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005 for his contribution to Indian music. He also won several National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer, including for the films Mere Huzoor (1968), Mera Naam Joker (1970), and Amar Prem (1972).
